More death to report. Today Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg died (1925-2008). He is best known for his collages and mixed media work. Bed is probably one of his most famous works, it hangs in MoMA. I really like Rauschenberg's stuff, apart from the use of animal parts. To be perfectly honest he helped pave the way for future artists, even my generation, to believe they didn't need to learn how to draw to be great. Now that doesn't mean he didn't have a formal education, because he did. It's just that young artists see his collages and think "I can do that". Think of the New York School in the 80s or every other artist in your figure study class at school. They all look at Duchamp, Warhol & Rauschenberg and feel like anatomy is not as important as an idea, therefore they think pasting broken plates to a canvas is just as important as drawing a human figure. Maybe it is... I'm not going to get into that right now!Anywho without artists like Robert Rauschenberg we'd have to actually learn to paint the human body in a realistic way. Instead we can get the same praise for throwing paint on a bed. That's the 20th century! Rest in peace Robert.
