Last night Maria and I went to see the new Tim Burton film
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. If any of you even kind of know me then my review of this film will come as no surprise. Look, Tim Burton is one of the most creative directors in cinematic history. When he calls up Johnny Depp it's unfair. I'm sad to say
Sweeney Todd is based on a play so Danny Elfman was not needed for an original score. That was my only real concern going into it, but it worked out just fine, just like Ed Wood. This film is awesome. The look of dark London is great, the costume design and theatrical blood are perfect. This film reminds me a lot of Tim Burton's overlooked gem,
Sleepy Hollow. Both have that foggy look, same time period, same costumes, Johnny Depp with crazy hair and a British accent and heads/throats being cut throughout the film. I like that Tim Burton's inner circle now includes his wife Helena Bonham Carter (
Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and Planet of the Apes) because I love her. Other great actors in
Sweeney Todd include Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ed Sanders (the little boy) and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Everything is in the right place for a Tim Burton film but, like always, it was really Tim Burton's use of Johnny Depp that steals the show. Well, I'd say Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter together. Helena has already given her voice to a Tim Burton film as the corpse bride in
The Corpse Bride. Johnny Depp on the other hand was a "?" After the opening scene all concerns about his voice go out the window, and why wouldn't they? He's Johnny Depp right? Of course he can sing, of course he refused voice lessons for the film, of course he has a cool costume and of course every girl (and guy) in the theatre instantly grew more in love with him after hearing him sing. What-ev's, it's okay. Well, all and all, one of my favorite Tim Burton films and I highly recommend it.
